Mountain rescue has its own emergency doctor

Kronach- a skier who has had an accident off-piste, a mushroom picker who has had a heart attack, or a woodcutter who is seriously injured while working in the forest – in order to be able to help quickly and competently in these and many other acute emergencies in difficult-to-access terrain, future mountain rescue emergency doctors undergo comprehensive additional training, starting with climbing and skiing and extending to air rescue and training in high medicine. Hubertus franz, an emergency physician with the BRK-kreisverband kronach, also completed such a two-year training course. With him, the rennsteig mountain rescue team, founded in november 2015, now has its own mountain rescue emergency physician for the first time.

"That was quite a challenge", hubertus franz, who, together with around a dozen other doctors, underwent this highly demanding training at the bavarian mountain rescue service, is one of them. The summer was about climbing, safety techniques and moving in difficult terrain. In winter, skiing, ski touring and avalanche awareness in the high mountains – in this case garmisch-partenkirchen – were the focus of attention. "Everything is done under real conditions. For air rescue, for example, we went to the mountain rescue center (ZSA/zentrum fur sicherheit und ausbildung) in bad tolz and trained there with a helicopter simulator", the emergency doctor reports on a cable car set up there and a replica helicopter hovering on the ceiling to simulate, for example, the rescue of a heart attack patient in a gondola.

Fitness is a must

The training also includes a physical fitness test, so fitness is an absolute must. "I am proud that I managed to do all this. This is a great confirmation for me; after all, I am not the youngest anymore", smiles the 58-year-old, for whom being an emergency physician has always been his dream job.

Organization, medical knowledge, practical skills and physical fitness – many factors are crucial to mastering missions in often the most difficult conditions. This combination makes the training so demanding and challenging, but also so enriching and valuable. In order to maintain a continuous standard, all mountain rescue emergency physicians are recertified on a regular basis at the training center in bad tolz.

"The training is bavaria far uniformly, all the same around which operational area it acts later – whether in the high mountains in the alps or with us in the middle mountains ", informs the emergency physician, who is convinced of the necessity of a mountain rescue service in our region – especially in view of the topographical situation.

According to mountain rescue team leader ralf schmidt, the mountain rescue team is responsible for rescues on skiing, cross-country skiing, sports and hiking trails, mountain and cave rescues, rescues in impassable terrain, paraglider rescues, support for the land rescue service and disaster control. Every year, the team has to deal with a large number of operations and assistance services in this regard. The team has also been called in for accidents involving climbers, forestry workers, hikers, mountain bikers, skiers with spinal trauma and bone fractures, search and rescue operations, floods and animal rescues.

"We are very happy to now have our own mountain rescue emergency physician in our ranks", schmidt is grateful. As a full-fledged member of the team of emergency medical technicians, he plays a very important role. The participation of only a dozen doctors from all over bavaria in the annual course shows how demanding and comprehensive it is. The local mountain rescue emergency physicians were located in the mountain rescue centers of bayreuth, nurnberg or wunsiedel; in case of an emergency, they had to travel further distances.

The "rennsteig mountain rescue station," founded in 2015, is located in steinbach am wald in the local service center of the BRK-kreisverband kronach. Another support point is located in kronach with rescue vehicles.
