consumers fear more expensive christmas gifts

According to a survey, the vast majority of people in germany fear that buying christmas presents this year will be more expensive than originally planned because of supply bottlenecks.

A good half (54 percent) of consumers expect prices to rise slightly, and more than a quarter (29 percent) even expect them to increase significantly, according to a survey conducted on monday by the business consultancy ernst& young (EY) published representative survey found.

Around 30 percent of respondents said they would bring forward their christmas shopping due to delivery problems. More than half (55 percent) want to do most of their christmas shopping in november. Another third wants to buy gifts in the first two weeks of december. Only just over one in ten respondents wants to wait until shortly before the holiday to buy presents.

Cash still in full swing

This year, however, cash or vouchers will again be the most common items on the table. According to the survey, almost every second respondent (47 percent) plans to save themselves the hassle of searching for a suitable gift this way. However, the popularity of gifts of money and vouchers has declined recently. A year ago, 59 percent of those surveyed wanted to give a gift certificate or money as a present, two years ago it was 69 percent. This year’s popular gifts also include foodstuffs, sub-merchandise, toys, books, clothing and cosmetics.

The importance of online shopping for gifts was also allowed to increase this year. Around 30 percent of respondents in the survey said they prefer to do their christmas shopping online. By comparison, only 28 percent of respondents in 2020 and only 17 percent in pre-corona 2019. However, for a good third of those surveyed (35 percent), the traditional local retailer will still be the first choice for buying presents this year. By comparison, the figure for the previous year was 42 percent. Around 35 percent of respondents said they had no preference and looked for gifts both online and in stores.
