Felix hentschel got to the point. "Here the spectators applaud the last runner just as loudly as the first one. That’s exactly what makes the world culture race so likeable", said the 29-year-old after his victory in the 11.2-kilometer sparkassenlauf. While the top runner of the LG bamberg had already crossed the finish line after 35:36 minutes, there were still runners arriving at the maxplatz a good hour after him. She also received a lot of applause from the large crowd of spectators. Halb bamberg was on the move again on sunday in the heart of the world heritage site – if not as a runner, then at least to cheer along the route.
11380 runners at the start
Also the eighth edition of the roughest running event of northern bavaria was again an event of superlatives. A total of 11,380 runners took part in seven races, most of them again in the most demanding, the half marathon (3800). And in this one, after 2013, there was once again a new track record.
In sunshine and mild temperatures, but with a strong wind, brenda kebeya pulverized the best time in the women’s race. The kenyan remained in 1:20:36 std. Clearly below the previous best mark of sandra haderlein, who ran two years ago in 1:24:46 std. Victory. This time the runner from SC kemmern, who had to take almost half a year off due to an injury, finished in 1:31:07 std. Third. Due to her long compulsory break and the associated training backlog, haderlein said: "I’ve been to every world culture race so far. But this one was the worst." Second place went to the newcomer from bamberg, inga-lena schomburg-heuck (LG stadtwerke munchen/SG sparkasse bamberg ) in 1:24:44 hrs.
"There was a lot of up and down. I like that. I will be there again in two years", said the 25 year old new course record holder kebeya, who runs for the LAC quelle furth and whose boyfriend christian bareib runs for the LG bamberg.
In the men’s half marathon, the course record set by bedford’s darren deed (1:10:25 std.) not in danger. Jonas lehmann from tus heltersberg won at his first start in bamberg in 1:11:35 std. In front of mario wernsdorfer (LG bamberg/1:12:12) and sven perleth (SC ostheim-rhon/1:15:12).
Decision at buger top
While kebeya ran a race against the clock, lehmann and local hero wernsdorfer were still tied on the first half of the race. At the buger lead at kilometer 12, lehmann made a decisive breakaway. "But mario was always on the line, I had to go all the way until the end", said lehmann, who as a mountain runner found the climb to altenburg much easier than the later second. "The first five kilometers were brutally hard," he joked, wernsdorfer admitted. The police officer did not want to use as an excuse the fact that he had entered into marriage the day before. "We only got married in a civil ceremony, the church wedding and the rough night are yet to come", he joked.
Nevertheless there was a home victory. At the brose run, which was 300 meters longer than usual this year due to construction work on the footbridge over the hollergraben in the grove and covered 11.2 km, wernsdorfer’s club colleague hentschel was the best of the 3630 starters. The local hero love the second-placed jasper cirkel (LG gottingen/38:19 min.) almost two minutes behind him. On rank 3 came marc jaming (homburg/38:29). "The temperatures were a bit high and the wind a bit strong. But the many curves make it impossible to set a fast time anyway", said hentschel, who already made pressure on the first three kilometers and landed a start-goal victory.
For hentschel, the run in his hometown is always a seasonal highlight. "This unbelievable cheering, that is pure goose bumps", said the LG athlete, who after a ten-year running career now wants to take off as a triathlete. He wants to qualify for ironman hawaii in two years at the latest.
In the women’s race, poland’s anna rostkowska won the 11.2 km in 40:58 min. Ahead of monika pletzer (marburg/41:13) and ulrike schwalbe (ATS kulmbach/43:59). "There were so many spectators on the course. I have never experienced this before", said the winner, who comes from jelenia gora (hirschberg), the polish partner region of the bamberg district.
The shortest of the three distances for the adults was the one over 4.4 kilometers. The wieland run, in which 1330 active runners started, was won by konstantin wedel of the LAC quelle furth (13:21 min.) and the triathlete eleisa haag from TV 48 coburg (15:54).
Course record by julia barth
A course record was also set by the youngsters. The bosch school run for third and fourth graders over 1.6 kilometers was won by julia barth (kaulberg school) in a new best time for girls of 6:19 min. In front of her twin sister anna (6:21). Both were faster than the best boy.
